The Public Domain Foundation, sponsor of the 2003 MUSIC TO LIFE songwriting contest, proudly presents, the music of 10 cutting-edge singer-songwriter finalists! These inspiring performances of socially and politically significant material were selected from over 270 submissions by an esteemed panel of judges, including Tom Chapin, Tom Paxton, Judy Collins, Holly Near, Len Chandler, Christine Lavin, Peter Yarrow, Noel Paul Stookey, and Mary Travers. Finalists performed their songs May 31st on the Threadgill Stage at the 2003 Kerrville Folk Festival in Texas; the grand prize finalist also opened the mainstage performance that same evening.
Founded in 1972 by Rod Kennedy, the Kerrville event is the longest continuously running music festival of its kind in North America and is known internationally as a Mecca for singer-songwriter's of varying musical styles.
Music To Life finalists typically represent many different geographical regions of the country and offer a wide range of songs, which speak to such diverse subjects as the emotion of children in foster care, the vitality of volunteers, and the brutal impact of war. Our three top finalists also received donations to charities of their choice and, in addition to creating a live platform for these artists to voice their issues, Public Domain Foundation works to promote their songs as educational and informational vehicles for organizations that share similar concerns.
Created by Noel Paul Stookey (Peter, Paul and Mary) in 1971 to distribute the proceeds of "The Wedding Song", the Public Domain Foundation , directed by Liz Sunde, has donated almost $2 million in support of a host of children and family service organizations, domestically and abroad.
